Chasing a BQ? All 15 Boston Qualifiers in Our Index, Ranked

Fifteen races in the BestRaces index are certified Boston qualifiers. Here they are in score order — from the five-borough giant to a fast, flat morning in Mesa.

A Boston qualifier isn’t just a race — it’s a credential. USATF certification, verifiable timing, and a course legitimate enough that the Boston Athletic Association will take its results at face value. Fifteen races in our index carry that mark. Ranked by composite score:

Reading the list like a BQ hunter

Score and speed are different questions. Our composite rewards field, history, credentials, and character — not course-record potential. California International sits twelfth overall yet is the race marathoners whisper about for qualifying; a net-downhill point-to-point into Sacramento with a start-line culture built around the attempt. Mesa, fifteenth, exists almost entirely for the fast morning. Meanwhile Big Sur at seventh is a BQ on paper that nobody runs for time — you run it for the coastline.

The safest bets combine both. Chicago and Grandma’s rank high and carry reputations as places where qualifying times happen. Houston is the quiet value pick: top-ten score, January air, and a flat loop.

Yes, Boston itself is a qualifier. Requalifying at Boston is a rite of passage — third on this list, and the only entry where the credential is also the destination.
